Highlights for Fiscal Year

  • Sponsored 3 intensive programs (20 hours +) for 64 students in Southeast Georgia to learn about career opportunities in healthcare.
  • Sponsored 1 Health Careers Camp for 19 teens from 5 counties to increase awareness of and academic preparation for the health professions.
  • Partnered with the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health to offer the seventh annual Public Health Day for Young Adults (PHYA 2016). This resulted in 77 students and teachers from 3 counties and 4 high schools participating in this daylong event. • Conducted 35 health careers presentations for 1,210 students throughout Southeast Georgia to provide information about health career opportunities.
  • Participated in 14 Health Career fairs at schools, universities, and technical colleges reaching 2,323 students.
  • Partnered with East Georgia Regional Medical Center to maintain a physician shadowing program for pre-med college students.
  • Served as representatives on numerous community and regional boards, committees and advisory councils.
  • Assisted students in obtaining 800 rotations for a total of 112,820 hours of clinical training with a group of 165 clinical preceptors.
  • Hosted one undergraduate student and one graduate student public health intern for a total of 900 hours.
  • Managed 12 third year medical students from PCOM (GA-Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine) who are part of MCAHEC’s Anchor Program for the academic year 2015 – 2016. This included assistance with recruitment, identification and securing their core and selective rotation sites, and by providing students with opportunities to experience social and professional aspects of the community in Warner Robins.
  • Hosted 2 Mercer University PA students in the Community Integration Program (CIP); each student completes selected rotations and complementary service learning activities in one MCAHEC location.
  • Provided housing for 206 students on community based clinical rotations; provided travel assistance for 102 students on community based clinical training rotations.
  • This year we were able to document that 44 AHEC supported students graduated and returned to our region to practice; an additional 198 of them stayed within state to practice.
  • Provided multiple opportunities for 71 health professions students to experience working with migrant and seasonal farmworkers through a series of 18 farmworker housing outreach visits on evenings and weekends. Partner schools included Augusta University, Georgia Southern University, Mercer University, Oconee Fall Line Technical College, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Southeastern Technical College, and South University. Disciplines included medicine, nursing, nutrition, pharmacy, public health, dental assisting and others.
  • Sponsored 14 continuing education programs, training 910 health professionals. Topics included Nursing Updates, Care Coordination, Rural Access to Care, among others.

  • Sponsored 3 intensive programs (20 hours +) for 57 students in Southeast Georgia to learn about career opportunities in healthcare.
  • Sponsored 2 Health Careers Camps for 46 teens from 16 counties to increase awareness of and academic preparation for the health professions.
  • Partnered with the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health to offer the sixth annual Public Health Day for Young Adults (PHYA 2015). This resulted in 69 students and teachers from 4 counties and 4 high schools participating in this daylong event.
  • Conducted 25 health careers presentations for 1,094 students throughout Southeast Georgia to provide information about health career opportunities.
  • Participated in 5 Health Career fairs at schools, universities, and technical colleges reaching 1,793 students.
  • Partnered with East Georgia Regional Medical Center to maintain a physician shadowing program for pre-med college students.
  • Sponsored “Embracing Diversity in the Healthcare Workforce”, a seminar for pre-health profession college students. This is available as an archived webinar on www.healthtecdl.org. Georgia College and State University co-sponsored this event and the webinar was broadcast from Milledgeville. Additional audiences participated at Georgia Southern University.
  • Served as representatives on numerous community and regional boards, committees and advisory councils. One staff member was selected to participate in Leadership Bulloch 2015 sponsored by the Statesboro Bulloch Chamber of Commerce.
  • Assisted 293 students in obtaining 778 rotations for a total of 103,332 hours of clinical training with a group of 147 clinical preceptors.
  • Hosted a public health intern for a total of 600 hours.
  • Managed 19 third year medical students from PCOM (GA-Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine) who are part of MCAHEC’s Anchor Program for the academic year 2014 – 2015. This included assistance with recruitment, identification and securing their core and selective rotation sites, and by providing students with opportunities to experience social and professional aspects of the community in Warner Robins.
  • Hosted 2 Mercer University PA students in the inaugural Community Integration Program (CIP); each student completes selected rotations and complementary service learning activities in one MCAHEC location.
  • Provided housing for 184 students on community based clinical rotations; provided travel assistance for 128 students on community based clinical training rotations.
  • This year we were able to document that 111 AHEC supported students graduated and returned to our region to practice; an additional 88 of them stayed within state to practice.
  • Provided multiple opportunities for 72 health professions students to experience working with migrant and seasonal farmworkers through a series of 18 farmworker housing outreach visits on evenings and weekends. Partner schools included Georgia Regents University, Georgia Southern University, Armstrong Atlantic State University, South University, Mercer University, and Southeastern Technical College. Disciplines included medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, dental assisting and others.

  • Conducted 31 health careers presentations for 1,505 students throughout Southeast Georgia to provide information about health career opportunities.
  • Participated in 18 Health Career fairs at schools, universities, and technical colleges reaching 2,800 students.
  • Partnered with East Georgia Regional Medical Center to develop a physician shadowing program for pre-med college students.
  • Sponsored “Embracing Diversity:  Minorities in the Health Professions”, a seminar for pre-health profession college students.   • Managed 16, third year medical students from PCOM (GA-Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine) who are part of MCAHEC’s Anchor Program for the academic year 2013 – 2014.  This included assistance with recruitment, identification and securing their core and selective rotation sites, and by providing students with opportunities to experience social and professional aspects of the community in Warner Robins.
  • Provided housing for 311 students and travel assistance for 143 students on community based clinical rotations.
  • This year we were able to document that 35 AHEC supported students graduated and returned to our region to practice; an additional 80 of them stayed within state to practice.
  • Provided multiple opportunities for 68 health professions students to experience working with migrant and seasonal farmworkers through a series of 14 farmworker housing outreach visits on evenings and weekends.  Partner schools included Georgia Regents University, Georgia Southern University, Armstrong Atlantic State University, South University, Mercer University, and Southeastern Technical College.  Disciplines included medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, dental assisting and others.
  • Sponsored 24 continuing education programs, training 896 health professionals.  Topics included Advance Practice Update, Professional Perspectives on Family and Workplace Violence, ICD-10 Workshop, and Elder Abuse, among others.

  • Partnered with the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health to offer the fourth annual Public Health Day for Young Adults (PHYA 2013). This resulted in 63 students and teachers from 2 counties and 4 high schools participating in this daylong event.

 

  • Conducted 61 health careers presentations for 2,208 students throughout Southeast Georgia to provide information about health career opportunities.

 

  • Participated in 17 Health Career fairs at schools, universities, and technical colleges reaching 2,081 students.

 

  • Partnered with East Georgia Regional Medical Center to develop a physician shadowing program for pre-med college students.

 

  • Sponsored “Embracing Diversity: Minorities in the Health Professions”, a seminar for pre-health profession college students. This is available as an archived webinar on www.healthtecdl.org.   • Served as representatives on numerous community and regional boards, committees and advisory councils.

 

  • Assisted 427 students in obtaining 789 rotations for a total of 118,044 hours of clinical training with a group of 126 clinical preceptors.

 

  • Managed 16 third year medical students from PCOM (GA-Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine) who are part of MCAHEC’s Anchor Program for the academic year 2012 – 2013. This included assistance with recruitment, identification and securing their core and selective rotation sites, and by providing students with opportunities to experience social and professional aspects of the community in Warner Robins.

 

  • Assisted six 3rd and 4th year medical students from Mercer School of Medicine by partnering with Archway to implement the Georgia Rural Medical Scholar Program (GRMSP) in Washington County. The program selects students with a strong interest in rural medicine and provides clinical rotation experiences in a rural community on a repeated basis. MCAHEC helps with planning, assists with recruitment, credentials students, and provides support to students and preceptors. Additionally, MCAHEC staff serves on the Board.

 

  • Provided housing for 300 students and travel assistance for 231 students on community based clinical rotations.

 

  • This year we were able to document that 21 AHEC supported students graduated and returned to our region to practice; an additional 8 of them stayed within state to practice. We identified 6 who chose to practice in another state.

 

  • Provided multiple opportunities for 52 health professions students to experience working with migrant and seasonal farmworkers through a series of 10 farmworker housing outreach visits on evenings and weekends. Students included medical students from Georgia Regents University, Physician Assistant students from South University, and Public Health and nursing students from Georgia Southern University.

 

  • Sponsored 30 continuing education programs, training 718 health professionals. Topics included Advance Practice Update, Cross Cultural Issues in Counseling, Professional Perspectives on Family and Workplace Violence, among others.

 

  • As part of a national AHEC initiative, MCAHEC sponsored 2 programs: “Serving Those Who Have Served: Educating Community Healthcare Providers Working with Service Members, Veterans, and Their Families.”

 

  • Through HealthTecdl, MCAHEC sponsored 3 distance learning events. Topics included:

  • Partnered with the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health to offer the third annual Public Health Day for Young Adults (PHYA 2012). This resulted in 123 students and teachers from 2 counties and 5 high schools participating in this daylong event.

 

  • Conducted 27 health careers presentations for 1,426 students throughout Southeast Georgia to provide information about health career opportunities.

 

  • Participated in 13 Health Career fairs at schools, universities, and technical colleges reaching 2,091 students.

 

  • Sponsored a Teen Health Forum with 11 partner agencies for 2,175 8th graders in every middle school in Houston County.

 

  • Sponsored “Embracing Diversity: Minorities in the Health Professions”, a seminar for pre-health profession college students. This is available as an archived webinar on www.healthtecdl.org. Georgia College and State University co-sponsored this event and the webinar was broadcast from Milledgeville. Additional audiences participated at the College of Coastal Georgia and Georgia Southern University.

  • Assisted 329 students in obtaining 503 rotations for a total of 77,264 hours of clinical training with a group of 150 clinical preceptors.

 

  • Managed nine third year medical students from PCOM (GA-Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine) who are part of MCAHEC’s Anchor Program for the academic year 2011 – 2012. This included assistance with recruitment, identification and securing their core and selective rotation sites, and by providing students with opportunities to experience social and professional aspects of the community in Warner Robins.
